Chief Joseph, Nez Perce by Peter C. Sedlow
In 1871, Chief Joseph became chief of the Nez Perce tribe that roamed throughout the Pacific Northwest. He was known for his long struggle to defend his ancient homeland and keep peace with the white man. The period of peace lasted for 70 years, until he was finally forced to fight. Chief Joseph led his people on a long journey towards Canada (safety) but surrendered only forty miles from the boarder for the sake of the tribe’s women and children.
Chief Joseph’s long struggle for peace with the white man, in an era of such violent conflict, remains one of the most inspiring stories of all time.
